There is nothing quite like a few extra pairs of hands on the towpath. On 29 July, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust welcomed volunteers from Johnson Matthey and St James’s Place, in Cirencester, for a joint corporate working day in Swindon.
Both teams worked hard despite the heat, and the Trust reports that their efforts have made a real difference locally — including helping the canal to hold its water far more effectively. Johnson Matthey also kindly donated a generous amount of PPE for future volunteer days, which will help keep even more helpers safe and busy in the months ahead.
With well-maintained towpaths drawing ever more walkers, cyclists and commuters, days like this keep the whole corridor in good shape. The Trust has more bank repair works planned later this year, so the momentum looks set to continue.
