Llangollen Canal: A Complete Heritage Guide
The Llangollen Canal runs for 46 miles from Hurleston Junction in Cheshire to Llangollen in Denbighshire, Wales. Originally known as the Ellesmere Canal, this waterway was never completed as originally planned but became one of Britain’s most engineered canals, featuring the longest aqueduct and highest navigable channel in the country.

Why the Canal Was Built
The Ellesmere Canal Company was established by Act of Parliament in 1793 with ambitious plans to link the Mersey, Dee, and Severn rivers, creating a crucial trade route between the industrial areas of the West Midlands, Cheshire, and North Wales. The scheme aimed to transport coal, limestone, slate, and agricultural products, with particular focus on serving the iron foundries and lime kilns of the Welsh borders.
Local landowners and industrialists backed the project, recognising the potential to move slate from the Horseshoe Falls quarries near Llangollen and coal from the Ruabon coalfield. Chester merchants also supported the canal as a means to improve their trading position.
Construction and Engineering
William Jessop served as chief engineer, whilst Thomas Telford acted as general agent and resident engineer, gaining the experience that would establish his reputation. Construction began in 1793 and proceeded in sections. The main line from Chester to the lime kilns at Pontcysyllte opened in 1805, though the original grand scheme was never completed.
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, completed in 1805, stands as the canal’s greatest engineering achievement. At 1,007 feet long and 126 feet high, it carries the canal over the River Dee in an iron trough supported by eighteen stone pillars. Telford used cast iron trough plates bolted together and sealed with Welsh flannel soaked in boiling sugar—an innovative technique that reduced weight and construction time.
The Chirk Aqueduct, finished in 1801, carries the canal 70 feet above the Ceiriog Valley over ten stone arches spanning 710 feet. A tunnel at Chirk, 1,378 feet long, was cut through solid rock. Engineers also constructed the Whitehouse Tunnel near Ellesmere, measuring 191 yards.
Working Life and Trade
The canal principally carried slate from the Llangollen area, limestone from Trevor, and coal from Ruabon. Narrowboats operated by families transported these materials to markets in Chester, Ellesmere, and via connections to the national network. The section beyond Pontcysyllte to Llangollen, completed in 1808, functioned primarily as a feeder bringing water from the River Dee via the Horseshoe Falls weir.
Towns along the route, including Ellesmere and Whitchurch, developed wharves and became distribution centres. The canal remained moderately busy throughout the nineteenth century, though it never achieved the commercial success originally envisaged.
Decline and Restoration
Railway competition from the 1840s onwards reduced traffic significantly. By 1944, commercial carrying had virtually ceased. The canal’s primary function became water supply to the Shropshire Union Canal system. Abandonment was proposed in 1944, but the waterway was retained for water transfer.
Pleasure boating gradually increased from the 1950s. Today, the Llangollen Canal operates entirely for leisure navigation, maintained by the Canal & River Trust. UNESCO designated the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and surrounding canal a World Heritage Site in 2009, recognising its outstanding engineering significance.
