Ashton Canal: A Heritage Guide
The Ashton Canal runs from Dukinfield Junction in Tameside to a junction with the Rochdale Canal in Manchester city centre. This waterway was built to serve the rapidly expanding cotton mills and coal mines of eastern Lancashire during the Industrial Revolution.

Origins and Purpose
Parliament authorised the Ashton Canal in 1792 to connect the cotton manufacturing towns of Ashton-under-Lyne, Droylsden, and Openshaw with Manchester’s commercial centre. The canal’s promoters included local mill owners and coal mine proprietors who needed cheap transport for raw cotton arriving via Liverpool and coal from the mines around Oldham and Ashton.
The waterway formed part of a wider network linking the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and Peak Forest Canal, enabling through traffic between Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Manchester. This strategic position made the Ashton Canal particularly valuable to industrialists seeking to move goods across the Pennines.
Construction
Benjamin Outram, who also engineered the Peak Forest Canal and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, designed the Ashton Canal. Construction began in 1794 and took two years to complete. The project cost approximately £45,000, considerably less than many contemporary canals due to the relatively flat terrain.
The route required 18 locks to overcome the changes in level, all concentrated in the lower section approaching Manchester. These locks rise from the junction with the Rochdale Canal at Manchester to the summit level, which continues eastward to Dukinfield. Portland Basin, where the Ashton meets the Peak Forest Canal and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, became an important junction with substantial warehouses.
Working Life
Throughout the early 19th century, the Ashton Canal carried enormous quantities of coal from the Lancashire coalfield to Manchester’s mills and homes. Cotton, timber, and general manufactured goods travelled in the opposite direction. The waterway generated substantial revenues for its shareholders, with dividends sometimes exceeding 10 per cent annually.
The canal sustained workshops, stables, and warehouses along its route. Communities such as Clayton and Openshaw grew significantly as industry concentrated along the waterside. By the 1830s, traffic volumes made the Ashton one of the most profitable short canals in Britain relative to its length.
Decline and Restoration
Railway competition began in the 1840s when the Manchester and Birmingham Railway opened parallel to the canal. The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway later absorbed the canal company in 1846. Traffic declined steadily through the late Victorian period as railways proved faster and more reliable.
Commercial carrying ceased in the 1950s, and by the 1960s several sections had deteriorated badly. Parts of the canal in Clayton were culverted and filled. The Ashton Canal officially closed to navigation in 1968.
Restoration began in 1968 when volunteers and British Waterways commenced clearance work. The canal fully reopened in 1974 after restoration of locks and dredging of the channel. Today it forms part of the Cheshire Ring, a popular leisure cruising route. Portland Basin now houses a museum documenting the canal’s industrial heritage.
