The FBW flag turned up on the Trent and Mersey Canal this week, at a bridge with a job most people walk straight past.
Bridge 163 and Booth Lane Middle Lock
On the Fund Britain’s Waterways Facebook group, Shirley Sefton shared a photo of a campaigner flying the FBW flag from Bridge 163, right at Booth Lane Middle Lock (Lock 68) in Moston, Cheshire East.
Bridge 163 is an accommodation bridge — one built so a landowner could still cross the canal to fields cut off by the new waterway. It and Lock 68 are Grade II listed, on a canal engineered by James Brindley and completed in 1777. You can see Shirley’s original post here.
Why the campaign matters
Locks and bridges like these only stay open and safe with proper maintenance, and that takes reliable, long-term government funding. Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition of more than 160 organisations calling for exactly that, on behalf of the hundreds of thousands who use and love Britain’s canals and rivers.
