Our canals and towpaths are at their best when everyone feels welcome — and a gentle reminder now and then helps keep them that way.
The Cotswold Canals Trust has shared a friendly towpath code from the Stroud Valleys Canal Company (SVCC), setting out how walkers, cyclists, boaters, anglers, paddleboarders, families and wildlife can all share these spaces happily.
The gist is simple: pedestrians always have priority; keep dogs on a short lead and clean up after them; slow down and ring your bell when cycling; give wildlife plenty of space; take litter home; and stay clear of locks, boats and maintenance equipment. Please never enter the canal or throw anything into the water. Horses, e-scooters, motorcycles and modified e-bikes are not permitted on the towpath.
