The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust has launched a campaign with a clear ask: make sure the restored canal is written into the plans for the proposed White Horse Reservoir. Campaigners want the South East Strategic Reservoir Option (SESRO) — now the White Horse Reservoir — to include the full navigable reinstatement of the historic Wilts & Berks Canal around the reservoir and on to the River Thames.
The Trust warns that this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that could be lost unless canal restoration is fully built into the reservoir’s final Development Consent Order plans. Working with Thames Water and SESRO representatives, it points to substantial benefits: new wildlife habitats, walking and cycling routes, health and wellbeing gains, tourism and jobs, and the protection of more than 200 years of heritage. The Trust’s figures include some £7.7 million a year in economic activity, £5.4 million in annual NHS savings from more active lives, and £14.4 million in wellbeing benefits.
With key planning decisions approaching, the Trust says time is running short. Supporters can help by responding to public consultations, contacting local councillors and MPs, joining the Trust, and spreading the word.
