Towpath Talk marked the 250th anniversary of James Brindley’s death (27 September 1772) with a feature by Mark Lancaster. Brindley died with his final project, the North Oxford Canal, having only reached just below Hillmorton Locks.
The article reports how the Old Mortonians heritage group hoped to install an information lectern at the spot to mark the milestone, only for the plan to run into obstacles over permissions. It’s a poignant look at how a pioneer’s legacy is still being fought for at the water’s edge, two and a half centuries on.
