There is exciting news on the Chesterfield Canal, where a smart new waterside development at Staveley Basin has just welcomed its first tenants.
The development, called The Moorings, has handed the keys to five businesses — 86 Degrees, HappyWired, Little Loving Care, Twenty Two Eleven VIP and Optima Consumer Finance. It offers a mix of office, retail and leisure space, and one of the ground-floor units under offer is a restaurant and bistro overlooking the canal basin, complete with an outdoor dining area right by the water.
The Moorings is part of the £25 million, government-funded Staveley Town Deal regeneration programme, and is expected to create between 40 and 60 new jobs. A new road and footpath have also improved access, encouraging more people to walk, cycle and boat along this stretch of canal. Further funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority will go towards new jetties so boats can moor in the basin.
It is heartening to see the canal at the heart of this kind of regeneration — turning a historic waterway into a place where people want to live, work and spend time. A few retail and office units remain to let, so the story is not finished yet.
