• Journey’s end at Anderton after a hot day afloat

After a long, sunny day on the water, there are few finer sights to tie up beside than the great iron frame of the Anderton Boat Lift.

Safely in at Anderton

Fund Britain’s Waterways shared the happy news that its campaign flotilla had arrived at the Anderton Boat Lift after a great — if very hot — day on the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Weaver. You can almost feel the mix of tiredness and satisfaction in that update: crews who’ve done the miles, worked the locks and shared a memorable day afloat, all in the name of the waterways they care about. The campaign’s own photos and updates are on @FBW_Campaign.

One good day, one big cause

Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition of organisations speaking up for the hundreds of thousands of people who use and love Britain’s canals and rivers. Days like this one — boats gathering, arriving at a landmark like the Anderton Lift, drawing a crowd and a camera or two — are how the campaign keeps its message alive: that our waterways are precious, well-used and in real need of sustainable, long-term government funding. A hot day’s cruise is a joy in itself, but it’s also a gentle, determined bit of campaigning.
