• Flying the flag at the Northwich River Festival

Sometimes a single photograph tells you everything about why a campaign matters — a banner, a riverside, and a few people who care enough to turn up.

A banner, a mayor and an MP

Fund Britain’s Waterways shared a lovely snapshot from the Northwich River Festival this weekend: FBW chair Hazel Owen standing behind the campaign banner alongside Andrew Cooper, the MP for Mid Cheshire, and the Town Mayor of Northwich, Bob Cernik. It is exactly the kind of moment the campaign does so well — bringing local representatives face to face with the people who use and love their waterways, in the very place those waterways run through.

Why it matters

Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition speaking up for the hundreds of thousands of us who use and love Britain’s canals and rivers — boaters, walkers, anglers, paddlers and the towns and villages built around the water. Its message is a simple one: our inland waterways need sustainable, long-term government funding if they are to survive for future generations rather than slowly falling into disrepair. Photo calls like this one, where a chair, an MP and a mayor all stand behind the same banner, are how that message reaches the people who hold the purse strings.
