Sometimes the best campaigning happens almost by accident, in the middle of an ordinary day on the water. This week one boater turned a simple test run into a small act of advocacy.
A banner goes up
Herb Eppel took his narrowboat, the splendidly named Happy Cranker, out for a test drive and used the opportunity to put up a Fund Britain’s Waterways banner. His photo shows the boat sitting handsomely on the water with the campaign’s message displayed on the bank behind. It’s a lovely example of how the campaign spreads — not through grand gestures, but through individual boaters choosing to fly the flag wherever they happen to be. His post appeared in the Fund Britain’s Waterways Facebook group.
Every banner counts
Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition speaking up for the hundreds of thousands of people who use and love Britain’s canals and rivers. Its message is straightforward: our waterways need sustainable, long-term government funding to stay open and cared for. Every banner along the towpath, every boat that carries the campaign’s name, helps make that case visible to the people who pass by — and to the decision-makers who hold the purse strings.
