The Fund Britain’s Waterways cruise keeps turning up small pieces of canal heritage worth a second look, and this is one of them.
The Wheelock double bridge at Lock 66
Shirley Sefton has shared a photo of Bridge 152 at Lock 66 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, also known as the Wheelock Bottom Lock double bridge in Sandbach, Cheshire. It is a Grade II listed building, given that status for its unusual configuration as a paired double bridge. A Fund Britain’s Waterways banner is flying from the bridge. Heritage worth funding
Structures like this are part of what makes the canal network special, and keeping them safe costs money. Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition of more than 160 organisations speaking up for the hundreds of thousands of people who use and love Britain’s canals and rivers. It is calling for sustainable, long-term government funding so that listed bridges, locks and the waterways they serve are properly maintained for the future.
