Fund Britain’s Waterways has shared BBC coverage of boaters in the West Midlands racing to move their boats to safe water before drought-hit canals are closed.
Boaters racing the clock
The campaign pointed to a BBC News report, “West Midlands boaters race against clock as drained canals close”, on crews trying to get their boats off stretches that are being shut as water runs low. As Fund Britain’s Waterways added, this is not only a West Midlands issue: low water and closures are affecting the waterway network right across the country. Why it matters
Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition speaking up for the hundreds of thousands of people who use and love Britain’s canals and rivers. Its central argument is that the waterways need sustainable, long-term government funding. Without it, drought, emergency closures and ageing infrastructure will keep forcing boats off the water and cutting communities off from the canals on their doorstep.
