Restoration runs on people power, and here is a lovely example of it. The Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust has been celebrating two of its young volunteers, Jack and Michael, who have been rolling up their sleeves at this week’s Waterway Recovery Group canal camp down at Darnford Moors Ecology Park.
Both are Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award volunteers, giving their time to the Lichfield Canal restoration as part of the effort at Darnford Moors, where teams have been building the base and walls for the eventual Darnford Lane crossing.
There is something heartening about seeing the next generation getting stuck in alongside the seasoned WRG crews. It is exactly this kind of hands-on graft, and the fresh faces choosing to spend their summer on it, that keeps the dream of a fully restored canal moving forward.
