There is nothing quite like standing on a brand-new bridge over a canal that, not so long ago, was little more than a memory. On the Wilts & Berks Canal, volunteers have just reached exactly that kind of milestone.
As reported by the Swindon Advertiser, a newly rebuilt canal bridge is the latest achievement in the long-running scheme to restore part of this historic waterway — the culmination of a three-year project. It is the sort of patient, hands-on work that gradually stitches a lost canal back together, one structure at a time.
Projects like this are a reminder of just how much is achieved by volunteers giving their time and skill, year after year, to bring the Wilts & Berks back to life. Every rebuilt bridge, wall and lock brings a continuous, navigable canal a little closer.
