• Northwich’s remarkable Victorian swing bridge

Every so often a post comes along that makes you look at a familiar structure with fresh eyes. This week a Fund Britain’s Waterways supporter did just that with Northwich’s Town Bridge.

A clever piece of Victorian engineering

Shirley Sefton shared a fascinating snippet about the bridge, which she notes is one of the earliest electrically driven swing bridges in Britain. Opened in 1899, the 300-tonne Victorian structure sits on a clever floating pontoon that lets it physically rise and fall with the water — an ingenious solution designed to survive the historic salt-mine subsidence in the area. It’s the kind of detail that reminds you our waterways aren’t just scenery; they’re living heritage, full of engineering stories waiting to be told. Her post appeared in the Fund Britain’s Waterways Facebook group.

Heritage worth funding

Structures like the Town Bridge only survive because they’re cared for, and that’s exactly what Fund Britain’s Waterways is campaigning for. The coalition speaks up for the hundreds of thousands of people who use and love Britain’s canals and rivers, calling for sustainable, long-term government funding to keep this extraordinary network — bridges, locks, aqueducts and all — in good repair for generations to come. When funding falls short, it’s often these irreplaceable historic structures that are most at risk.
