• A canal near Oswestry runs dry: why the campaign matters

Not every post from the towpath is a happy one. Sometimes a single photograph tells you exactly why a campaign like this one exists.

A boat left high and dry

In the Fund Britain’s Waterways Facebook group, Brian Clarke shared an alarming piece of news, headlined “‘Environmental disaster’ feared as canal near Oswestry runs dry and fish killed.” You can find the post on the Fund Britain’s Waterways Facebook group.

Scenes like this are exactly what boaters and campaigners warn about when a waterway isn’t properly maintained and resourced. A canal isn’t just a route for boats; it’s a living habitat, and when it fails the damage ripples out to the fish, the wildlife, the people who live afloat and the communities alongside.

Why this is what the campaign is about

It’s easy, on a sunny day watching a flotilla go by, to forget how fragile our waterways really are. Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition of over 160 organisations speaking up for the hundreds of thousands of us who use and love Britain’s canals and rivers — and its central argument is a serious one. Without sustainable, long-term government funding, the network faces more closures, more breaches, and more heartbreaking scenes like the one near Oswestry. Maintenance that is put off doesn’t go away; it simply comes back as an emergency, and often as an environmental one.

That’s why the cheerful campaign cruises and the grim news photographs are two sides of the same coin. Both are asking the same thing: that we value these waterways before we lose them.
