There’s a real reason to celebrate at the home of the Chesterfield Canal Trust. Hollingwood Hub has been awarded a Green Flag Award for the tenth year running, keeping its place among the country’s very best green spaces.
The Trust, which leases the site from Derbyshire County Council, picked up the honour in the scheme’s own thirtieth-anniversary year. Jim Bower, who leads the Trust’s Gardening Team at the Hub, said it was “brilliant to get this official recognition for the hard work of our volunteers,” adding that the public tell them they love the space and the team take great pride in creating somewhere so welcoming.
Hollingwood Hub is far more than a garden. It’s home to the Trust’s Information Centre and Shop, Katey’s Coffee Shop and a large car park, and it’s the base for regular public trips and charter cruises aboard the tripboat Madeline, with paddlesports hire run by CJB Training & Adventure alongside Trust volunteers.
Hollingwood is one of a record-breaking 2,391 UK sites to earn a Green Flag this year. As Paul Todd MBE of Keep Britain Tidy put it, the volunteers here have shown “what can be achieved when green spaces are properly supported and managed.” If you’re passing, it’s well worth a visit.
