If Darnford Moors is on your summer walking list, hold off for a couple of weeks. The Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust has confirmed that Darnford Moors Ecology Park will be temporarily closed from Friday 17 July to Sunday 2 August 2026 while canal construction work takes place on site. For safety reasons, there will be no public access during this period.
The works are being delivered by two groups of Waterway Recovery Group canal camp volunteers, over the weeks of 18 to 25 July and 25 July to 1 August. They will be laying a concrete base and building two new concrete block walls running for roughly 35 metres – a real step forward for the restoration of the Lichfield Canal at this key spot.
The Trust asks visitors to steer clear of the site until the works are finished. It is short-term disruption for long-term gain: every metre built here brings the restored canal a little closer.
Hats off to the WRG volunteers giving up their summer to make it happen. Read the Trust’s full announcement here: Darnford Moors Ecology Park to close for construction work.
